Salwan Momika, who sparked tensions with his Quran burning protests in Sweden in 2023, has been shot dead.

Swedish authorities said the Iraqi refugee was shot dead in an apartment in Södertälje, in the capital city, Stockholm on Wednesday.

Five persons were arrested on Wednesday night in connection with the shooting, Stockholm police said.

In June 2023, Momika sparked outrage outside Stockholm Central Mosque when he set some pages of the Quran on fire after wrapping a copy of the Islamic holy book in bacon, slamming it shut and kicking it like a football.

On Thursday, the Stockholm District Court was due to deliver a verdict in a trial where he was accused of incitement to racial hatred.

The court said the verdict was postponed after it was confirmed that one of the defendants had died.

Stockholm police said officers were called to a suspected shooting at an apartment in Hovsjö around 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT) on Wednesday.

Local reports indicated Momika had been livestreaming on social media around the time of the shooting.

The victim, who was not identified by name, was found with gunshot wounds and taken to hospital for medical attention.

The police announced that the victim died on Thursday morning.
