Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv early on Monday morning, setting off air raid sirens throughout the country and forcing Poland to dispatch fighter jets to guard its airspace.

Ukraine’s air defence systems successfully intercepted more than 10 cruise missiles and nearly 10 ballistic missiles, according to Kyiv’s military administration.

However, falling debris from the downed weapons caused damage and injuries in several districts of the capital.

Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko reported damage to a non-residential structure, a metro station entrance, and the boiler house of a water plant. Numerous cars were set on fire, and at least two people suffered injuries. When debris fell, emergency services were called to events in the districts of Svyatoshynksyi, Holosiivskyi, and Solomyanskyi.

Witnesses in Kyiv reported hearing a series of loud explosions, likely from air defence systems intercepting the incoming missiles.

This attack follows a massive missile and drone barrage launched by Russia a week earlier, which killed seven people and targeted energy infrastructure across Ukraine.

Russia continues to deny targeting civilians in the ongoing conflict, which began with Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine over 30 months ago.
