The artist statement above describes best what Ruchi’s newest single entitled ‘The Prey” is about. Most people might know what the Toronto-based artist,of Nigerian descent, sounds like as an artist from hisearlier songs such as “No Criminal” (2021)“Disaster” (2020), “New Day” (2021)and the ones in “Euphoric Interlude” EP which broughtasoothing combination of his lyrical depth along with catchy arrangement within the realm of Pop and R&B music. But this time, Ruchi shows us his other side withthis recent release. Produced by his longtime friend and musical partner, Double G, ‘The Prey” is an afrobeat-infused, R&Bnumber driven by sexyinstrumentation that sits perfectly with Ruchi’s descriptive storytelling. It is safe to say that this song successfully demonstrates his progression and versatility in creating his own music.
According to Ruchi, the idea of “The Prey” came from wanting to create a vivid record about temptation that would bring people into that world for the duration of the song. He says, “Temptation is a tricky concept because it is difficult to explain how, at one moment, we may want something we know we should not want.” Ruchi plays the role of the victim, singing “I know I’m a fool, but I can change”, who eventually caves in to the temptation. The most impressive aspect of the record is that he strikes a perfect balance between innocent fun and guilty pleasure and truly invites the audience into a world where no one is safe from the infectious bounce and soothing, siren-like singing.
Although the song may seem simplistic in nature, the instrumentation highlights his vocals beautifully and allows one to groove without thinking too much. Ruchi finds a pocket that encourages the audience to listen a little closer, and it draws you in at every turn. It is a fun story with strong lyricism and beautiful, captivating instrumentation.
