A tragic hit-and-run incident occurred on Monday, May 12, at approximately 11:43 PM along G.U. Ake Road, Eliozu, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, claiming four lives and injuring two pedestrians.
The driver, identified as Benson Michael, aged 36, lost control of a Toyota Camry (registration ABJ 10 EM) and struck six pedestrians near Unity Filling Station.
According to sources, the speeding vehicle veered onto the walkway, killing four pedestrians instantly. The Rumuokoro Police Ambulance evacuated the bodies early Tuesday morning, May 13, 2025. The two injured victims were rushed to BMH Hospital for treatment.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, stating, “One Benson Peter Michael, male, 36 years old, and the driver of a Toyota Camry with registration number ABJ 10 EM, lost control of the vehicle and collided with six pedestrians. Tragically, four of the pedestrians were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others sustained injuries.”
Iringe-Koko added that the driver is in custody, and the vehicle has been impounded. The deceased were taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) Mortuary, and the case will be transferred to the State Traffic Department for further investigation.
“The Command deeply regrets the unfortunate incident and assures the public that justice will be served,” she said.
