Rishi Sunak tenders apology in last message as UK Prime Minister

By John Ogunsemore

Rishi Sunak was apologetic to the British public on Friday as he prepared to leave as Prime Minister after his Conservative Party was trounced by the Labour Party in Thursday’s general election.

The 44-year-old said he would step down as Leader of the Conservative Party.

Sunak had called the general election six months earlier than he had to, a risky gamble he hoped would swing public support for the Tories based on better economic data.

However, his party lost spectacularly, bringing an end to its 14-year majority in the House of Commons and occupancy of 10 Downing Street.

“To the country, I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry,” he said outside the Prime Minister’s residence at Downing Street, before heading to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation as prime minister to King Charles III.

“I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change. And yours is the only judgement that matters.”

“I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss.”

Sunak added, “Following this result, I will step down as party leader. Not immediately, but once the final arrangements for selecting my successor are in place.

“This is a difficult day at the end of a number of difficult days. But I leave this job honoured to have been your Prime Minister.”

Daily Sun can report that Leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer has assumed the post of Prime Minister after meeting King Charles III in Buckingham Palace.
