• Moves to roll out plans for next general election

The Executive Committee of Nawfia Town Union in Njikoka Local Government Area Anambra State, restored to office by an Ogidi High Court last week, has resumed duties.

Addressing a meeting of stakeholders in the community including red-cap chiefs, village representatives, religious leaders and some prominent indigenes at the Nawfia Town Hall yesterday, the President of the town union, Sir. Nathan Enemuo informed the meeting that, following the court order that restored their leadership of the town into office , they have 47 days remaining to conclude their tenure in office.

He recalled that, in accordance with the provisions of the Nawfia Town Union Constitution which came into effect on 23rd February, 2013, their committee was elected into office on 20th April, 2019 to serve for a 3 year tenure which was to expire on 20th March, 2022. Their tenure was still running when they were unlawfully sacked by the Anambra State Government of Willie Obiano on 2nd February, 2022.

The Governor then constituted a Caretaker Committee which have been declared illegal by a court of competent jurisdiction in Anambra State.

He further informed the meeting that, as provided in the town union Constitution, they had 90 days within which they should constitute an Electoral Panel to conduct elections for a new Executive Committee for the town and that they had already appointed members of the Electoral Panel before their illegal dissolution on 2nd February, 2022.

He further announced that the panel had again been authorised and directed to resume their activities.

The Chairman of the Electoral Panel, Prince Chikodili Aniefuna introduced members of his 5- man panel at the meeting and informed that they would meet soon after to discuss and announce guidelines for the elections of the next Executive Committee for the town union.

The Chairman Board of Trustees of the Town Union and Legal Adviser of the Town Union, Beluolisa Nwofor SAN informed the meeting that the Enemuo – led Exco of the Town was following due process in all their actions, and that having been restored into the office, they would also be guided by the Rule of Law in all their actions.

Also present during the meeting was the traditional ruler installed by Enemuo led exco , Prof. S.C. Moguluwa.

Gabriel Obineme , Publicity Secretary, disclosed to our reporter that deliberations at the meeting had been concluded when one of the claimants to throne of the Traditional Rulership of Nawfia, Dan Obele arrived at the venue with some police officers who said that they had instructions from their superior officers at the State Police Headquarters to stop the meeting.
