The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has ordered the arrest of National Chairman of Tricycle Association of Nigeria, Shamsudeen Apelegun, for failure to appear before it over alleged abuse of office.
The committee, in a statement by its head of media, Chooks Oko, yesterday, accused Apelegun of shunning its summons for five consecutive times.
According to the statement,”the committee noted he had been invited for over five times but never showed up.
In a unanimous motion, members of the committee ordered the Inspector General of Police to arrest and bring Apelegun to its next sitting on December 3.
“A law firm, I.M Iliyasu and co had petitioned Apelegun to the House on behalf of some aggrieved members but he is yet to show up to answer to the charges.”
The statement quoted the chairman of the panel, Mike Etaba, as saying ,”We are here to make sure Nigerians are happy and will thus not condone any act of lawlessness. The Inspector General of police is hereby requested to bring Apelegun in person during the next hearing” .
The panel, the statement added, has threatened to also order the arrest of the management of Prima Factory, which is located in Lagos, over alleged failure to show up at the committee ‘ to answer charges against the neglect of one Rafiu Taiwo, their staff who was injured in the workplace but abandoned by the company. “
It noted that “the committee warned that companies operating in the country must treat Nigerians with dignity and sense of responsibility. The company, producers of plastic proform and caps are run by the Chinese.”
