From Ndubuisi Orji, Abuja
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has said the legislative agenda of the 10th House was designed to deliver good governance and restore hope in the country’s democracy.
Abbas stated this, yesterday, while speaking at the inaugural National Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda of the House, jointly organised by the Green Chamber in collaboration with support from the National Assembly Library Trust Fund.
Abbas explained that the eight-point legislative agenda was drafted after consultations with Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and development partners to serve as a guide to the parliament in lawmaking, oversight and representation from 2023 to 2027.
He noted that the effort of the House has yielded results especially in the areas of increased legislative output as the House has been extraordinarily proactive and productive.
“We also took special care to align our priorities with the Renewed Hope agenda of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, ensuring synergy between the legislative and executive arms of government.
“Thus, our agenda embodies collaborative governance by engaging in dialogue with the Executive. This approach allows us to fulfil our independent mandate while ensuring that our legislative actions support national objectives and address the pressing needs of our citizens.”
The Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, said President Tinubu is laying a foundation for the country’s prosperity through bold reforms.
Kalu, who stated that the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Tinubu’s administration is redefining the country’s development trajectory, said the country is transitioning from challenges to solutions.
“His bold reforms-from fiscal restructuring to security sector overhauls-have laid a resilient foundation for prosperity. Under his stewardship, Nigeria is witnessing a paradigm shift: a nation transitioning from potential to performance, from challenges to solutions, and from despair to hope.
“Under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we have already seen tangible policy wins; unified exchange-rate windows restoring investor confidence, a record in capital inflows into our energy and tech sectors, and the passage of four streamlined tax-reform laws this year to eliminate multiple taxation and spur productivity. These reforms underscore the fact that bold legislation, when executed with conviction, can transform our nation.”
Similarly, Kalu noted that the House has recorded tremendous progress in the pursuit of its 8-point legislative agenda. He explained that the 10th House, under the leadership of the speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, has considered a total of 1059 bills, in different areas of national life, since its inauguration on June 13, 2023.
