From Kemi Yesufu, Abuja
CONTROLLER General of Prisons, Peter Ekpendu, has denied any involvement in the assaults of a female lawmaker, Onyemaechi Mbrakpor, in the National Assembly complex last Wednesday.
The House, last Thursday, summoned Ekpendu to explain his role in the assault of the female lawmaker.
Aside from Ekpendu and officers in his convoy, others questioned by the committee were the Police, Department of State Security (DSS), Sergeants- at- Arms and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSDC)
Ekpendu said he was already out of the assembly complex at the time of the assault.
He insisted he was highly embarrassed to be associated with the assault of a female lawmaker, particularly, as he was not aware of the incident.
However, he told the Adams Jagaba Adams-led committee that queries have been issued to officers who witnessed the alleged assault even as they were directed to report for further interrogation at the national assembly police post.
Ekendu urged that if the allegations against his details are found to be true, the position of the law should be fully applied. “It can’t be anything short of dismissal,” he stated.
Biafra : Court of Appeal to hear Kanu’s case May 5
From Godwin Tsa, Abuja
THE Abuja division of Court of Appeal, yesterday, shifted hearing on the appeal that was filed by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, till May 5.
Justice Abdul Aboki, who led two others, adjourned the matter after it was discovered that the appeal was not listed for hearing in the court’s cause list.
However, Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Chuks Muoma, SAN, insisted that it was the appellate court that originally fixed April 25 to hear the matter. Thereafter, Justice Aboki, promised that the court would look into the matter on the next adjourned date.
Kanu, alongside two other pro-Biafra agitators, David Nwawusi and Benjamin Madubugwu, had gone before the appellate court to challenge what they termed “strange procedure” adopted in their trial.
Already, the appellants, who are facing a six-count treason charge, have urged the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, to stay further hearing on the case against them, pending the determination of their consolidated appeal.
