Qoray Mobility and Energies Limited, in partnership with Sterling Bank, is set to break the Guinness World Record for the greatest distance travelled by an electric tuk-tuk in 12 hours with its electric tricycle, the Qoray Teak.

Popularly known as ‘keke,’ the electric tricycle record attempt is scheduled for January 25, 2025, underscoring Qoray’s commitment to advancing sustainable mobility in Nigeria and Africa.

Speaking at the official announcement at a press conference in Lagos, Olabanjo Alimi, CEO of Qoray, described the record attempt as more than just a milestone for the company. “It’s about proving that electric vehicles can perform under pressure and excel in real-world conditions,” he noted. He further emphasized that this venture is a bold statement of Africa’s leadership in the global sustainability movement, driven by innovation, resilience, and ambition.

Beyond the record attempt, the company outlined a long-term vision to make the Qoray Teak the preferred choice for public tricycle transport in Nigeria. Akinkunmi Akingbogun, Group Head of Qoray’s Mobility Division, revealed that engagements have commenced with riders and their unions to highlight the significant benefits of replacing traditional fuel combustion tricycles with the Qoray Teak. “The Teak offers an incredible 60–70 per cent cost savings compared to internal combustion engines (ICE) vehicles, making it a game-changer for drivers and businesses looking to reduce operational expenses while contributing to environmental sustainability,” Akingbogun stated.

To facilitate a smooth transition, Qoray launched a convenient acquisition model, allowing riders to make a minimum 10 per cent down payment, receive the tricycle for commercial use, and repay the balance over three years. This approach ensures that operators can start earning immediately while transitioning to cleaner, more cost-effective mobility.

The Qoray Teak, powered by a state-of-the-art lithium iron phosphate battery providing over 2,000 deep charge cycles, promises over five years of reliable performance. Akingbogun also highlighted the tricycle’s MacPherson shock absorber system, which ensures stability and smooth rides even on rough terrains.

The endeavor could have far-reaching implications for the region. According to him, the initiative aims to position Nigeria as an innovation hub for renewable energy and mobility while inspiring local entrepreneurs and engineers to push boundaries. “This attempt is not just about breaking a record; it’s about breaking barriers,” he explained.

The Qoray Teak has undergone rigorous performance tests and endurance trials to ensure it meets the highest standards, with drivers and support crews meticulously trained for the challenge. Akingbogun urged stakeholders including government and private sector player to leverage the initiative for a safer, more sustainable environment.
