A popular religious critic, Guru Deseye Subai has thrown shades at pastors in Nigeria. Guru Deseye Subai who presents himself as a Christian mystic, spiritual teacher, and healer has always talked about controversial topics bothering on water spirits, origin of ailments and their permanent cure, the underworld, false prophets/pastors amongst others, through his social media platforms and on national TV. He is known to have hosted a popular TV show titled “My Brother Man and Sister Woman” on national and local TV stations which were broadcast nationwide for about 10 years, where he gained massive popularity because of his controversial/spiritual teachings. On one of his videos that has gained widespread visibility across social media, Guru Deseye Subai stated that some pastors in Nigeria are deceiving their members. According to Guru, a lot of information that are being passed from pastors to their members are false. It is no surprise to anyone that the topic of Christianity in Nigeria is a very sensitive one and this is why this topic has caused uproar not just among Christians, but among pastors and general overseers of famous churches in Nigeria.

Guru Deseye Subai had made numerous points in his video that seemed to have driven a sword through the hearts of church goers and church owners alike. Guru, on another of his video had stated that ‘churchianity’ is all about laying emphasis on the payment of tithes which according to Guru, was borrowed from paganism, even though he is yet to give concrete reasons for this assertion. Guru further mentioned that Christianity borrowed more from paganism than paganism from Christianity. “We are witnessing the irrepressible rise of ‘churchianity’ and not Christianity.” He said.

Insinuating that the majority of Christians today practice paganism has been perceived as a slap in the face of church goers and clerics alike. This assertion happens to have stung deep in the flesh of “devoted” Christians.

Some of his listeners and followers agree with his assertions and have called the church/religion scene in Nigeria one ‘big ponzi scheme’ while others have condemned his teachings.
