According to Pope Francis’ death certificate, the late pontiff died of a stroke, which led to a coma and “irreversible” heart failure.

The update was given by the Vatican on Monday as the world continues to mourn the passing of one of its most revered religious figures.

Pope Francis, who was 88 at the time of his passing, passed on after he was discharged from the hospital following a five-week stay while being treated for double pneumonia.

Per reports, Francis breathed his last at 7.35 am (0535 GMT) in his residence at Santa Marta in the Vatican.

He died of “cerebral stroke, coma, irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse”, the death certificate said.

The certificate added that Pope Francis had been down with a previous episode of acute respiratory failure when he had double pneumonia in the hospital.
