The Nigeria Police Force has said it would soon make public the verdict in the case of Owolabi Akinlolu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in Lagos.
The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed this on Monday.
Owolabi allegedly raped the secondary school student in his office at Ogudu Police Station, in Ojota, Lagos on June 29, 2024, after she reported her stolen phone at the station.
The case generated furore across the nation, with many Nigerians demanding the sack and prosecution of the suspect.
In late November 2024, the girl’s mother, Aramide Olupona decried the lack of progress in the matter after accusing the police of trying to bury the case in July.
On January 5, an X user, @IruefiNG rekindled interest in the case, calling on Nigerians to ensure justice is done and the alleged perpetrator is brought to book.
Reacting, Adejobi assured that the case had not been swept under the carpet.
He said, “The police have acted on this case. A report has been sent to the Force Headquarters.
“The query issued to the office has been processed. We will speak to this matter when we have a final verdict from the Force Disciplinary Committee and the Police Service Commission because of his rank, we need to involve the PSC.
“The medical report has been examined, and the case file has been studied as well.
“The verdict will be made public asap (as soon as possible).”
