The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the South-South Development Commission Bill into law, calling it a “historic step” toward addressing regional disparities. In a statement signed by National Chairman Godknows Igali, the group praised the National Assembly for expediting the legislation and expressed hope that the commission would complement governors’ efforts in tackling environmental degradation and infrastructure deficits in the oil-rich region.

PANDEF urged Tinubu to appoint “competent and tested hands” to lead the commission, emphasizing the need for urgent action on environmental remediation and infrastructure gaps threatening the South-South.

The group also reiterated calls for the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State, urging the president to reinstate suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the state legislature.

Earlier advocacy by PANDEF had criticized delays in approving the bill compared to other regions, framing the move as critical to equity and peace in the Niger Delta.

The group clarified that the South-South Commission is distinct from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which serves oil-producing areas nationwide.

Beyond the commission’s establishment, PANDEF highlighted worsening insecurity, poor infrastructure, and the need for fiscal federalism. The group urged enhanced security measures, completion of key roads like the East-West Road, and increased local participation in the oil sector.

Tinubu had earlier met with PANDEF leaders in March 2025, emphasising community development and support for NDDC’s Managing Director, Samuel Ogbuku. He acknowledged the region’s economic significance, stating, “Niger Delta is the goose that lays the golden egg. We must care for the goose; otherwise, we lose the golden egg”.

While critics questioned the necessity of such commissions, PANDEF framed the signing as a milestone in fostering inclusive development. The group pledged continued collaboration with the federal government, urging sustained focus on peace and progress.
