The body of the late Chief Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika, pioneer director general of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will be buried on December 6, at his country home in Umuebo, Abatete, Idemili North LGA, Anambra State. He was 89.
Oranika, a distinguished civil servant, was the first DG of the FCT from 1991 to 1994, during the crucial period when Nigeria’s capital was moved from Lagos to Abuja. He played a pivotal role in the city’s development and left a lasting legacy in urban planning and public service.
Born April 30, 1935, in Abatete, Anambra State, Oranika’s career spanned decades. He contributed notably to various federal ministries, including finance, education, and economic development.
He was known for his dedication to excellence, integrity, and leadership. During his tenure as FCT DG, Oranika marked significant milestones, including hosting the 1991 Organization of African Unity (OAU) summit. He was a Knight of the Order of St. Mulumba and the Order of St. Sylvester, generously contributing to the church and his community. He was also a strong advocate for the development of his hometown, Abatete, and earned the title of ‘Ochendo Abatete’ in recognition of his efforts.
