The Oyo State government has set a fixed price of ₦14,000 per metre for borehole drilling across the state. Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Arc Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, shared this during a meeting with groundwater stakeholders at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan.
He said the meeting tackled issues in the groundwater sector and aimed for teamwork on managing it well. Mogbonjubola stressed that working with stakeholders helps bring order and fairness to drilling rig owners and mid-level workers.
“One of the key priorities of the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration is to provide access to potable water across Oyo State through all viable means. This includes creating a conducive environment for individuals and communities to drill boreholes,” he said.
Dr Sunday Ojelabi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, opened the event. He highlighted water’s importance and urged support for the government’s plans. “Water is life, and those who provide it bring life. This gathering offers a platform for collective ideas to improve service delivery and promote compliance with the new regulatory framework,” he said.
Groundwater expert Mr Ajayi Richard noted progress in the sector. He said 23 companies work with the Ministry, running 12 active drilling machines. Both local and foreign rig owners are creating jobs for locals. Attendees included Engr Kolawole Olayinka of AWDROP, Prof Christopher Adeigbe of NMGS, Mr Ajibola Anjorin of Indigenous Drillers, ministry directors, and other key figures.
The group agreed to enforce rules, keep prices fair, and use sustainable methods for groundwater in Oyo State.
