The Oyo State government has reiterated its commitment to demolishing illegal structures around schools across the state, emphasising that there will be no reversal of this decision.
This assertion was made by the Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), Hon. Justice Aderonke Aderemi (Rtd.), during an inspection visit to the Jemibewon area of Sabo in Ibadan, the state capital.
Justice Aderemi reaffirmed the government’s dedication to maintaining a clean and lawful environment, stressing that the administration remains resolute despite concerns raised regarding the ongoing demolition exercises.
Speaking on Saturday after the inspection, she revealed that the visit was in response to a petition submitted to OYRLEA on 17th February 2025, which highlighted concerns about shanties near St. Gabriel School in the Jemibewon axis.
“Recall that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, ordered the removal of shanties around school areas and fences on 24th October 2023. This directive must be upheld in accordance with the rule of law,” Justice Aderemi stated.
She further explained that efforts had been made to engage with the affected individuals before enforcing the demolition.
“Letters have been issued twice to the occupants and owners of these illegal structures. Our officers have also met with the ‘Seriki n Sabo’ to discuss the matter, and an ultimatum to vacate the area was given,” she added.
However, following appeals for an extension, the government has agreed to delay the demolition until Wednesday, 19th March 2025, to allow affected individuals time to relocate.
