The Oyo State government successfully prevented a major fire disaster at the Bola Ige International Business Complex (BIIBCO), Gbagi, Ibadan, on Sunday, April 20.
Security officers on duty noticed smoke coming from Shop 332 and, upon investigation, found it was caused by an electrical spark from an improperly installed solar energy system.
The officers promptly alerted the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, which contacted the Oyo State Fire Service for immediate action. The fire service dispatched two fire trucks to the scene and quickly contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring shops and minimising damage.
The Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, Hon. Adeniyi Adebisi, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Mamud Okesade, spoke at the incident site. He confirmed the fire’s cause and praised the fire service for their swift response. Their timely action played a crucial role in averting significant damage and safeguarding lives and property.
Adebisi also thanked Governor Seyi Makinde for his commitment to emergency response and public safety. The governor’s proactive leadership has enhanced the state’s emergency preparedness through improved fire safety measures, routine inspections, and continuous personnel training.
Adebisi announced that the ministry will soon hold a stakeholders’ meeting to review the incident and develop strategies to prevent future occurrences. He urged business owners to comply with safety regulations and adopt proper fire prevention practices to protect their assets and the community.
The Babaloja of the Business Complex, Alhaji Mukaila Adebayo, also commended the fire service for their dedication and professionalism in ensuring the safety of lives and property within the complex.
