Asipa, a town in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, witnessed the second edition of the Ife North Annual Scholarship and Essay Competition (NASEC), a community-driven initiative founded and sponsored by Gbenga Owolabi.
Held at the Asipa Community High School Hall, the competition brought together 94 students from 24 secondary schools, both public and private, across the local government. The atmosphere was one of excitement and hope as students competed in essay writing and quiz segments for substantial cash prizes and scholarships.
Mrs. Ajayi Olubunmi, principal of Asipa Community High School, commended Owolabi for his generous support, highlighting the positive transformation his efforts have brought to the school and the wider community.
Reflecting on his journey as a former student and Senior Prefect of Asipa Community High School, Owolabi described the scholarship competition as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream to give back to his roots. He emphasised that his philanthropy is not politically motivated, explaining that the initiative aims to inspire students in Origbo Mejeeje to pursue academic excellence and greater aspirations.
The event drew notable dignitaries, including the Osun State Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole, who praised Owolabi’s dedication to advancing education. He noted that such grassroots efforts were vital to the development of the state’s academic landscape.
Also in attendance was the Deputy Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Oyewusi Akinyode Ireyode, alongside Kasope Abolarin and Abiola Awoyeye, all of whom lauded the initiative and its lasting impact.
Traditional rulers, including Oba Mufutau Oyekanmi, Alasipa of Asipa, and Oba Mesach Oyediran, Olulamokun of Yakooyo, prayed for Owolabi’s continued success and longevity.
Students walked away with prizes ranging from ₦90,000 to ₦250,000, while participants, teachers, and organisers were also recognised for their contributions. More than a competition, the event served as a beacon of hope, reinforcing the power of education and the value of giving back to one’s community.
