• 3 sexagenarians recount their tortuous academic trips at UNILAG
By Hauwa Mohammed
At the recent convocation of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, 213 postgraduate students bagged PhD. Among them were sexagenarians.
Daily Sun spoke to three of the sexagenarians: Sixty-two-year-old Amijina Ebere Juakin, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; sixty-three-year-old Anglican Priest, Folorunso Ogini, Department of Guidance and Counseling and sisty-year-old Daniel Kundi, Department of Mass Communications. They proved that age is no barrier to academic excellence.

Juakin breaks new ground in Metallurgical Engineering in a remarkable tale of resilience and determination. His research has the potential to revolutionise Nigeria’s industrial sector.
Juakin, is a lecturer, researcher, and now PhD graduate. His achievement is an inspiration to many, especially in a society where academic pursuits are often associated with younger individuals. His work ethic, intrinsic motivation and drive to impact his field are at the core of his success.
Journey so far
Asked about his academic journey, Juakin described it as “rough and stressful,” citing significant financial challenges: “I relied on personal discipline and a strong work ethic, studying for six to eight hours daily.” His ability to adapt and persevere enabled him to overcome the hurdles of returning to school at an older age.
Focus of his thesis
Juakin’s research focused on creating a composite material using nano-sized particles derived from periwinkle, pumpkin, and coconut shells. These materials were used to reinforce aluminum, resulting in a more durable connecting rod for internal combustion engines. His innovative approach addresses the limitations of traditional cast iron rods, paving the way for stronger and lighter alternatives.
The impact on society
The societal implications of Juakin’s research are far-reaching: “This research has the potential to boost local manufacturing, create jobs and strengthen our industrial sector.” He envisions collaboration with companies to bring this innovation into mass production.
Overcoming age-related challenges
While age posed certain challenges, Juakin viewed it as a motivating factor rather than a hindrance. “I never saw my age as a limitation. Instead, I drew strength from my experience and intrinsic motivation.”
Future plans
Juakin: “I am committed to publishing my findings in international journals and transferring knowledge to younger generations.” His goal is to inspire students and contribute to the global body of knowledge in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.
Encounter with Ogini
I am an Anglican priest with a deep commitment to pastoral care. I embarked on a seven-year journey to earn my PhD degree in Guidance and Counselling from the University of Lagos. This period was fraught with challenges, including strikes and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite these obstacles, I remained steadfast in my pursuit of academic excellence, driven by a desire to better serve my congregation and community.
Family support during study
My wife was my pillar of support throughout this period. She endured the late-night study sessions and the disruptions to our household routine without complaint. Her unwavering encouragement was instrumental in my success.
What inspired my thesis on widowhood in Nigeria?
As a priest, I’ve encountered numerous widows facing distressing cultural practices. These include forced remarriage and degrading rituals, such as being compelled to drink the water used to bathe their deceased husbands. I felt a deep calling to address these injustices, which led me to research and write my PhD thesis on this subject.
Book on widows’ plight
Certainly. ‘Widow’s Plight’ delves deeper into the issues highlighted in my thesis. It aims to shed light on the suffering of widows in Nigeria and advocate for the abolition of harmful cultural practices. I plan to launch the book soon and use it as a tool to educate and raise awareness.
Impact of your study on society
I aspire to initiate conversations that lead to the eradication of oppressive traditions against widows. By delivering free lectures and engaging with communities, I hope to enlighten people and inspire change, ensuring that widows are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Challenges faced and how I overcame them
Balancing academic responsibilities with my duties as a priest and family commitments was indeed challenging. However, I believe in lifelong learning and resilience. My mantra has been, ‘It’s not how long, but how well.’ This perspective kept me focused and determined to succeed, regardless of age.
Plans after PhD
Beyond launching my book, I intend to continue my advocacy by organizing free lectures to educate the public about the challenges widows face. Additionally, I plan to write two more books on related topics to further this cause. My goal is to be a catalyst for positive change in our society.
Kundi: My PhD journey
It is just God. I started in 2016, and this is 2025, it has been nine years of struggles, considering the strikes and the COVID-19 pandemic. Although I give thanks to God, I came out with a 4-point.
Challenges pursing PhD
Indeed, a lot, I would say. My first degree was a long time ago, then my master’s, and now this. Considering the economic factors, I faced a lot.
Were the lecturers accommodating?
Well, they were quite nice, but they have to do their work. You know, a PhD is not a class where you must go with others; rather, it is when you finish your course.
Focus of your thesis
My thesis was about the “Change Begins With Me” campaign of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari. It is a Federal Government campaign programme, the knowledge and adoption of that campaign in Lagos State.
Impact of thesis on society
To a point, people are trying to change. But the report and recommendation that change begins from the top is what they are saying.
At your age, what do you intend to do with PhD?
I will just go into lecturing, probably in any of the private or government-owned universities. For me, education has stopped as I dive into journaling and writing.
