The Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has praised the fighting spirit of the Super Eagles against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the round of 16 match at the ongoing AFCON 2023 Cote d’Ivoire.
The Eagles saw off arch-rival Cameroon 2-0 in a pulsating encounter to set up a quarterfinals encounter against Angola on February 2.
Reacting to the result, the former Chief Whip of the Senate, singled out a few players from the squad that traded tackles with the Indomitable Lions for the superlative performances, even as he urged the players to attack massively and defend as a unit to achieve victory.
“I was very impressed with the match against Cameroon because some certain players showed class; like Ekong was good in the defense, Lookmon, Osimhen, and Frank Onyeka. These players were on duty.
“ In all, I saw a better Super Eagles and I pray they come out more forcefully. There is nothing wrong in Nigeria collecting all the trophies in Africa, even in the world.
“We have the best players in that team but we don’t have a team yet. Individually they are good players who play professional football outside the country, but they are not yet a team.
“They are not yet on duty, I want them to be on duty. This team can win the World Cup, with determination and togetherness. I encourage them to go further and play more as a team so that we can have good results.
Nigeria will play the Giant Sable Antelope in the AFCON 2023 quarterfinals by 6pm, at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan, on Friday, February 2, 2024.
