From Taiwo Oluwadare, Ibadan
Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, has urged Ibadan indigenes to unite in support of creating Ibadan State. He described the move as a long-standing goal to gain political recognition and drive rapid development for the historic city.
Speaking at the 2025 Ibadan Week, which began vibrantly at Awotan in Ido Local Government Area, Olatunbosun addressed dignitaries, cultural enthusiasts, and indigenes gathered to honour Ibadan’s founder, Lagelu. The week-long event kicked off with a symbolic visit to Lagelu’s sacred tomb, known as the Ojubo, reinforcing the city’s commitment to its heritage.
Olatunbosun expressed concern over encroachment on Lagelu’s ancestral land, noting that illegal developments have reduced the original twelve acres significantly. “Out of the twelve acres, it is now difficult to find even a full plot available,” he lamented. “This is unacceptable and a disservice to the legacy of intelligent Ibadan sons and daughters.”
He proposed transforming the Ojubo site into a major cultural and tourist attraction. This, he said, would protect the sacred land, boost the local economy, and enhance Ibadan’s global historical recognition.
Also, Olatunbosun highlighted that this year’s Ibadan Week would feature cultural displays, lectures, and exhibitions, all celebrating the unity and legacy of Ibadan’s people.
In his remarks, the Alawotan of Awotan, His Royal Majesty Oba Dauda Omotosho, praised the 2025 Ibadan Week Planning Committee for including the Lagelu Tomb in the programme. He supported efforts to reclaim the land and stressed its cultural significance. The monarch urged Ibadan indigenes to uphold the city’s values and heritage wherever they are.
Similarly, Alhaji Abiola Alli, President of the 2025 Ibadan Week Planning Committee, called on writers and historians to engage directly with individuals to ensure accurate historical records. He also advocated for sustainable land management, stating, “Ibadan land should not be sold but leased,” to preserve the city’s heritage for future generations.
