Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has signed two bills into law marking a new phase in the state’s judiciary and oil sector governance.
The first bill raises the retirement age for magistrates in the State from 60 to 65 years while the other increases the number of members of the state’s oil agency.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions that drive justice and economic development.
He emphasised that the legislative actions align with the state’s vision of enhancing judicial integrity and optimising the benefits of its natural resources for the people of Edo State.
The newly-signed bills are expected to take immediate effect, with relevant stakeholders expressing optimism about their potential impacts on governance and service delivery in the State.
The governor has also given the approval to employ 500 new teachers to boost the numbers of tutors presently operating across various public schools in the three senatorial districts.
Commissioner for Education, Dr. Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu, made this known on Tuesday in Benin City, shortly after his resumption at the Ministry of Education.
He revealed that the recruitment of new teachers, which will be done in tranches, is meant to fill up the numerous vacancies in public schools.
“This move is to ensure that the average Edo child gets the best in terms of education, even as we drive infrastructural development in the State.
“We are grateful to Mr. Governor for being a man of honour and his care for the average Edo child. A new dawn indeed is here, and a new Edo is risen,” Dr. Iyamu said.
He, therefore, called on duly qualified candidates to make use of the official website and link to apply and advised them against making payment to anybody or group as the application is free and recruitment will be strictly based on merit.
