From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta
The Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, on Wednesday, escaped an attack by representatives of student bodies during a protest in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
According to a statement from her office, the deputy governor’s convoy was en route to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, to represent the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, at the reception marking the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations when it encountered the protesting students.
The statement added that the irate students from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, armed with sticks and other dangerous projectiles, blocked the deputy governor’s convoy from passing.
“All efforts to allow the convoy pass proved abortive. As soon as the students realised it was the Deputy Governor, they became even more restive and rushed to attack her convoy with the intention of demobilising it, despite her security operatives and other police officers’ persuasion for the students to stay calm and allow the convoy to pass.
“This action from the students prompted her convoy to make an immediate detour to her lodge, allowing the protesting students to pass peacefully before she proceeded to the function she was slated to attend.
“Noteworthy is that vehicular movement was obstructed, while some of her security vehicles were damaged and her security details were hurt in the process of maintaining law and order, contrary to the students’ claims that they were shot at,” the statement concluded.
