Following widespread tributes to the late Nigerian boxing legend, Obisia “Golden Gloves” Nwankpa, the family has issued a clarification regarding the details of his passing.

In a statement made available to the Daily Sun Sports, his son, Alex Nwankpa, expressed appreciation for the tributes and media coverage honoring his father’s legacy. However, he called for a correction to the reported date of death and age.

Contrary to earlier reports stating that Obisia Nwankpa died on June 3, 2025, at the age of 75, the family clarified that he passed away in the early hours of June 2, 2025. He was born on June 14, 1949, and was just 12 days away from his 76th birthday at the time of his death.

“We deeply appreciate the recognition of my father’s contributions to Nigerian sports,” said Alex Nwankpa. “But we kindly request that the correct information be reflected, to honor his legacy with the accuracy and respect he deserves.”

Obisia Nwakpa remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated boxers, known not only for his achievements in the ring but also for his later contributions as a coach and sports administrator.
