From Idu Jude, Abuja
Dr Tanko Yunusa, spokesperson for Mr Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has clarified the purpose of Obi’s recent visit to prominent PDP leaders in Abuja. He denied that the visit was related to political ambitions for the 2027 elections.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Sun, Yunusa stated that the visit was solely focused on seeking solutions to alleviate poverty in the northern region of Nigeria. He emphasized that the choice of leaders to meet was based on their regional representation and their potential to contribute to the fight against poverty.
“We chose to meet them because Atiku is from the North East, Sen. Saraki is from the North Central, and Lamido is from the North West,” Yunusa explained. “Politics is dynamic, but that is not the target now. We should not be discussing that because this is off-season.”
He further elaborated that Obi had previously visited several areas in the north affected by poverty and disease, promising to provide assistance. These initiatives include drilling boreholes, establishing health institutions, and building modern schools for Almajiri children.
Yunusa confirmed that a comprehensive plan to combat poverty in the north will be unveiled after consultations with relevant stakeholders are completed.
