Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has congratulated Victor Osimhen, Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie for emerging winners in the 2023 CAF Player of the Year award ceremony.

In a statement, the governor said: “I congratulate the Nigeria duo, Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala for winning the 2023 CAF African Player of the Year, Men and Women categories respectively.  Kudos to the 2023 CAF Goalkeeper of the Year, Chiamaka Nnadozie on her win, also.

 “Their emergence is a triumph of the Nigerian youth and serves as inspiration for our young people to continue to pursue their craft with determination and hard work.”

The governor noted that the dominance of Nigerian players in this year’s ceremony is a testament to the talent of the players and their commitment to improving themselves, a feat which is now being recognized globally.

“I particularly celebrate Osimhen, who is of Edo origin. He has continued to make us proud and serves as an inspiration to children in the State who are being given the opportunity to pursue careers in sports with the reforms being implemented to improve grassroots sports,” he added.

Similarly, the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, has also congratulated Osimhen and Oshoala for their feats.

“I am profoundly delighted to congratulate our own Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala for bringing football glory to our dear country, Nigeria. Indeed, the icing on the cake is the fact that for the very first time, these two prestigious football titles are won by Nigerians.”

“For me, these awards are well deserved and befitting of the record-breaking performances both of you have put up in your respective clubs outside our shores and of course, in the Nigeria male and female national teams,” the Deputy Governor noted.
