A former royal scepter bearer to Oba Erediauwa, Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, has been honoured with the Akenuwa of Benin chieftaincy title by Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II.
The humility personified high ranking Chief Akenuwa, member of Iweguae in Eghaevbo N’ Ogbe royal Guild in Benin Kingdom, was recognised for his courage, passion and dedication to service in Benin Kingdom.
It is the first chieftaincy title to be conferred by Oba Ewuare II on any individual since the conclusion of his beloved mother, Iyoba Omo N’Ikuoyemwen, Iyoba Ewuare’s funeral rites, were rounded off a few months ago.
Before his elevation, Chief Akenuwa, played a significant role during Iyoba Ewuare’s funeral, giving rare insight into how people, and the dynasty have transformed over the past centuries in Benin, with unique culture and tradition.
Oba Ewuare II, who was joined by his Chiefs and other Palace functionaries, received Chief Akenuwa at the weekend in his Palace during the performance of Ekpomwen-abor rite.
Ekpomwen-abor is a ceremony of appreciation after conferment of chieftaincy title at Ugha Ozolua axis in the Oba Palace in Benin City.
Senior Palace Chiefs, Adanegbe Igbinoba, Eribo of Benin and Osaro Idah, conveyed the best wishes of the Oba to Chief Akenuwa, who danced joyfully to the admiration of the Oba during the ceremony.
Family, friends and well-wishers of Chief Akenuwa, including worshippers at Holy Aruosa Cathedral led by the presiding Priest in the church, Ohen-Osa Edebiri Igbinoghodua, were present during the brief outdoor ceremony.
Chief Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, the Akenuwa of Benin, thanked Oba Ewuare II for maintaining the Benin monarchy and promised not to let down the confidence reposed in him to serve the Oba.
Chief Akenuwa fondly called Oziya, prayed Almighty God and his ancestors to guide him through the uphill task, ahead of his visit to some Pilgrimage sites in Benin Kingdom.
“A Chief is a disciple of the Oba of Benin. Chieftaincy title in Benin is not just bestowed on anyone. It’s complimented by hard work and diligence”, he said.
