The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Kaduna State Chapter, has reaffirmed its strict policy against sexual harassment in motor parks across the state.

Acting Secretary Hassan Ibrahim emphasised this commitment during a review meeting on the “We For Them” project, implemented by the Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative (EWEI) and funded by the African Women’s Development Fund, held at the union’s secretariat in Kaduna on April 27.

Ibrahim stated, “We don’t joke with sexual harassment in our motor parks. Anyone caught is expelled from membership.” He noted that monthly meetings across Kaduna’s 23 local government areas ensure accountability. Praising EWEI’s support, he said the project has positively impacted members.

Project Focal Person Mendie N. Jeremiah lauded the union’s efforts, highlighting progress in eight major motor parks, including 740, Katin Kwari, and Sabo.

The project trained 80 members to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), inspiring by-laws based on Article 42 of the NURTW Constitution. Jeremiah said, “The union’s commitment sets a model for safer public spaces for women and girls.”

The collaboration between EWEI and NURTW has yielded significant results, strengthening efforts to curb SGBV in Kaduna’s transport sector.
