Minister of Innovation Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has said the establishment of National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) would reduce over dependence on foreign technology.

Nnaji made this known at the opening ceremony of a three-day high level policy dialogue and stakeholders’ engagement for the establishment of the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) and National Research Fund (NRF) in Abuja.

He noted that the president had already approved an inter-ministerial committee under the Office of the Vice President, to work on a draft Federal Executive Council memo for the establishment of the NRF.

He added that the committee comprising representatives from various key ministries and stakeholders, was tasked with creating a robust framework for the initiatives to thrive.

“This is a critical step in establishing the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) and the National Research Fund (NRF), initiatives that are set to transform Nigeria’s research and innovation landscape, which directly align with the President’s eight-point.

“A Bill for the establishment of the NRIC and NRF is currently under review by the National Assembly. This legislation is critical as it will formalise the Council’s mandate and provide the legal basis for sustainable funding.

“We are optimistic that the National Assembly will recognise the importance of this initiative and expedite its passage as soon as the Federal Executive Council completes its assignment,” he said.

He, therefore, called for collaboration among stakeholders across the government, stating that the NRIC was positioned to serve as a bridge that facilitates partnerships, promotes joint ventures and harnesses collective expertise.

On his part, the Executive Director, African Technology Policies Network (ATPN), Professor Nicholas Ozor said no country could develop without funding its research and innovation sector.

Professor Ozor appealed to the government to facilitate the passing of the executive bill to increase innovative funding both locally and globally.
