The north Central zone has the highest number of road crashes in Q2 of 2024 with 867.

According to Road Transport Data by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), South West followed with 661 while the South-East had the least with 119.

Similarly, the North-Central reported the highest number of casualties with 3,020, followed by the South-West with 2,019, while the South-South recorded the least with 452.

NBS also reported that the total number of road traffic crashes in Q2 2024 was 2,404, indicating a decrease of 9.69 per cent from the previous quarter (Q1) which recorded 2,662 and an 18.98 per cent fall from 2,967 in Q2 2023.

Of all crashes, the bureau, said, serious cases stood top in Q2 2024 with 1,525 compared to fatal and minor cases with 661 and 218 respectively. In addition, the three categories of cases (fatal, serious, and minor) declined in the quarter under review relative to the preceding quarter.

Also, a total of 1,076 males were killed in Q2 2024, accounting for 82.45 per cent whereas a total of 5,837 males were injured during the period, indicating 76.30 per cent..

The report further stated that a total of 3,612 vehicles were involved in road traffic crashes in Q2 2024, lower compared to the previous quarter which recorded 3,952, indicating a decrease of 8.60 per cent .

Recall that the total number of vehicles involved in road traffic crashes in Q2 2022, stood at 5,263 lower compared to 5,316 in Q1 2022. This is a major decline when compared with the result in Q2 2024.

But on a year-on-year basis, traffic crashes grew by 3.05 per cent from the same period of the previous year (2021).

However, disaggregated crashes by categories in Q2 2022 revealed that serious cases recorded the highest with 2,105, compared to fatal and minor cases with 823 and 354 respectively.

But the quarter-on-quarter analysis also showed that serious cases of crashes increased by 0.24 per cent in Q2 2022 relative to Q1 2022 which recorded 2,100. Fatal cases declined by 5.51 per cent in Q2 2022 relative to 871 in Q1 2022, while minor cases fell by 5.35 per cent from 374 in Q1 2022.

In terms of sex distribution of persons killed by crashes, a total of 1,225 males were killed in Q2 2022, representing 79.65 per cent. On the other hand, 313 females were killed under the same period of review, representing 20.35 per cent. On injuries sustained, more males had injuries from the crashes than females. Injured males stood at 7,003, representing 76.57 per cent relative to 2,143 injured females.
