The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to protests over its recent field report on ward and polling unit delineation in Warri Federal Constituency.
In a statement on Thursday, National Commissioner Sam Olumekun said people have misunderstood the process.
INEC’s report follows a Supreme Court ruling on 2 December 2022. It ordered a review of wards in Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West Local Government Areas. Olumekun explained that INEC started consulting stakeholders in February 2023, aiming to finish by July 2024.
Last week, on 4 April 2025, INEC held a meeting in Warri. They shared a draft report with ethnic group representatives. “The purpose was to give them the opportunity to raise any concerns they might have. The overall objective was to arrive at an amicable agreement endorsed by all the parties involved,” Olumekun said.
He stressed no final decision has been made. “Therefore, contrary to the speculations making the rounds, the Commission is yet to take a final decision on the delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency,” he noted. INEC wants feedback on the draft to guide further talks.
Olumekun urged peace in the area. “Meanwhile, we appeal to all stakeholders in the constituency to refrain from engaging in any activity that could threaten the peace and security of the area. The Commission will continue to operate based on fairness, equity, the rule of law and in full consultation with all stakeholders,” he added. INEC remains committed to a fair process.
