The Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) is embarking on a pioneering initiative aimed at revolutionizing transparency in the construction sector through the development of an extensive cost databank. Mr. Kene C. Nzekwe, President of the NIQS, announced this significant advancement during a National Workshop themed, “Innovative and Sustainable Construction Practices – Building a Resilient Cost-Based and Knowledge-Driven Industry with Integrity.”
Nzekwe emphasised that the workshop’s theme was meticulously chosen to highlight the essential role of knowledge, integrity, and innovation in cultivating a sustainable construction industry and, by extension, a robust and resilient nation.
“The forthcoming databank will be a cornerstone for promoting transparency and accountability within the construction sector,” Nzekwe explained. “It will facilitate effective monitoring and regulation of construction costs at various levels – local, state, and federal. Our goal is to ensure that every Naira spent on construction projects is meticulously accounted for, guaranteeing that we consistently achieve value for money.”
In his address, Nzekwe called on the government to engage quantity surveyors in all construction projects nationwide. “For the sake of accountability and the implementation of necessary checks and balances, it is crucial that quantity surveyors are involved in every aspect of construction. This will help ensure that our national resources are managed judiciously and that our development objectives are achieved with integrity and professionalism.”
Nzekwe highlighted the indispensable role of quantity surveyors in construction projects across various sectors, including civil engineering, building, heavy engineering, and industrial development. “Our profession is founded on principles of financial probity and accountability. Quantity surveyors are uniquely positioned to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget while meeting the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability.”
He further acknowledged the commendable efforts of NIQS members, who have consistently demonstrated ingenuity and integrity. “Through meticulous cost management and expert advisory services, our members have effectively minimized resource wastage, significantly contributing to national development. This workshop is designed to further enhance our members’ knowledge and skills, empowering them to deliver even greater value to the nation.”
Nzekwe concluded by reaffirming the NIQS’s commitment to advancing the construction industry through innovation and integrity. The new cost databank represents a crucial step towards achieving greater transparency and efficiency, ensuring that Nigeria’s construction sector continues to develop with integrity and excellence.
