The role and importance of security leaders can not be over emphasized because when they fail, the country is seriously affected socially, politically and it trickles down to the economy. In addition, when the security leader gets his policy  accurately, the result is positive in all aforementioned sectors.

This is the reason why it is not advisable to arbitrarily  change or tamper with laid down security templates and policy  while fighting terrorism.

For instance, the war template used by the General Tukur Brutai as the Chief of Army Staff and General Lucky Iranor  when he was the commander of the Operation Lafia Dole in Borno state shouldn’t have been phased out or jestitioned because it was a result oriented security template.

When it was utilized, Nigerians witnessed a progressive result. Among them were the recapturing of ten local governments back from the Boko Haram terrorists and  occupation of the Sambisa forest plus recovering of half of the abducted Chibok school girls. Today, the story and policy has changed because the initial security template and policy had been tampered with without any regards to the success attributable to the earlier successes. That a house is beautiful means that the first architectural design is still intact while some adjustments are added.. This is what was expected with the war on terrorism template. No wonder, we are witnessing rampant abductions around the country as if there are no security personels still on operational national duties. Imagine the records, 4,243 people were reported to have been kidnapped in 2023. 3,387 civilians, 200 soldiers, 116 police officers, 106 vigilantes, 17 civil defence corps, 4 security guards, 4 VIO officers, 3 customs officers, 2 immigration officers, 1 NDLEA officer, and 1 prison warder were reportedly killed in the period under review) To be continued)

Many people now have a GSM phone they carry all about. But even if you do, take your mobile to bed with you when going to bed. If there is an emergency, many find themselves in a fix not knowing what exactly to do, nor who to call. No wonder, when there is an emergency like the visitation of robbers at night, to call the police or call for help becomes difficult task. Many have forgotten that in their areas of residence, the police are there to protect and secure their safety. Ask an average Nigerian if he or she has the police emergency phone number and all that you hear is in the negative.

The surprising aspect of it all is that many don’t see the importance of storing the police numbers in their phone. I am aware that all the police public relations officers publicise  their emergency numbers wherein they can be reached in the course of danger or robbery attack, but it is unfortunate that Nigerians don’t take these numbers serious. In oversea countries, children are taught from school about the importance of emergency numbers or hotlines.

No wonder they are always quick to flash and threaten you with the police number-Nine- one-one (911) The reverse is the case in Nigeria, where very few Nigerians fall back to the police security number in time of trouble, instead what many do, is to obtain and store of the police commissioner, whose number, many believe can always be reached when they have police case instead of when they have useful information for the police. I have often wondered that with the level of criminality in the country, why are the telecommunication service providers not offering such assistance to the police by unanimously creating an emergency number for the police as it is done abroad.

If you get home and notice signs of a break-in: don’t go in or shout as the burglar could still be inside; go to a neighbour’s to call the police – if you think the burglar is still inside, let the police know; and don’t touch anything, you could destroy valuable evidence.

If the worst happens, and your house is broken into, your first step should be to contact the nearest police post. However, once the police have left, you might need more help picking up the pieces. Improve the security around your home. Take note of the entry point of the burgulars and fortify it. If they gained entrance through the door, you may as well replace the door and key. If they entered through the window, change the window or fortify it agaist any force entrance.

Keep your house and car keys safe and away from doors and windows. Fit a burglar alarm, but make sure it is installed properly and ensure that it works. keep your garage and garden shed locked with proper security locks, and keep any tools secure and out of sight;  trim back any plants or hedges that a burglar could hide behind.  Do you know that 35% of all burglaries are crimes of opportunity, and that the burglar lets themselves in through unlocked doors or windows. Do you know that you are ten times more likely to be burgled if you don’t have basic security – even something as simple as putting strong locks on your doors and windows will keep your house much safer. Do you k now that burglary has fallen by nearly 60% since 1995, but criminals are opportunists who will take advantage of any chance to steal from you, so you should remain aware. If you make your property more secure, it’s a lot harder for criminals to break in, and it’s easier for police to catch them.

One of the most intrusive and dangerous forms of burglary happens when somebody poses as a legitimate worker, for example from a utility company like water corporation, PHCN or artisans and tricks their way into homes. This is a rare but intimidating method, and I want you to know more about it so that you can protect yourself against it. Fit strong locks to external doors and windows, and make sure they are locked at all times

Always remove all keys from inside locks, and keep them out of sight and in a safe place Fit sturdy deadlocks to all doors and make sure your doors and frames are strong and in good condition – wood doors should be very thick. Fit a door viewer (spy-hole), and use them.

Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat, in a flowerpot or behind a loose brick – thieves know to look there first. When you are out in the evening, leave your lights on and shut the curtains. Install outside security lighting; if other people can see your property a burglar may think twice. Keep your tools and ladders securely locked up – a burglar could use them to get into your house. It is not enough for the police alone to fight crime, all hands must be on desk to support the police to store any police numbers for easy accessibility on your phone  please save A before typing any police station eg A Durumi  police station or 1Durumi police station .(concluded)
