The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s pivotal role in securing the nation, stating that at 162 years, the Army remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s national defense.

He made the declaration during an interdenominational church service marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL 2025), held across formations nationwide.

Represented by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Sokoto, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, the Army Chief emphasized the institution’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty, combating insecurity, and contributing to peace and development efforts across the country.

He said the Army will continue to exemplify professionalism, resilience, and sacrifice in counterterrorism operations, peacekeeping missions, and support to civil authorities.

The Nigerian Army at 162 remains a cornerstone of our national defense,” he stated.

In recognition of the fallen heroes, he paid tribute to the former COAS, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away in November 2024, describing his loss as deeply painful but one that reminds the Army of the importance of faith and courage in service.

“We take solace in God’s will and continue to pray for the families of our departed colleagues who paid the supreme price in service to our fatherland,” he added.

Highlighting the Army’s ongoing transformation agenda, the COAS reiterated the implementation of the “Soldier First” philosophy, which prioritizes troop welfare and operational readiness.

“In Sokoto, for instance, our main medical facility is undergoing renovation, yet surgeries continue across alternate locations. We’ve also improved water supply, acquired a 60kV generator for the mini waterworks, and renovated schools within the barracks,” Gen. Ajose noted.
