The Ebonyi State chapter of Action People’s Party (APP) has asked the Federal Government to declare emergency on the nation’s economy, stressing that only a sound and virile economy can sustain the new minimum wage.
The Chairman of the chapter, Chinedum Elekwachi, who stated this in a chat with Sunday Sun in Enugu, yesterday, lauded President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly for their positive collaboration that gave birth to the New National Minimum Wage Act.
He said: “The cooperating spirit of the lawmakers in this all important Act is highly commendable and a pointer that patriotism is finally taking its place in our national dealings. President Buhari as well has shown uncommon concern about the welfare of Nigerian workers by his spontaneous assent to the Act.
“While these gesture is worthwhile, our great party wishes to note that for sustainability and regular payment of the approved N30,000 minimum wage, the Federal Government must immediately declare state of emergency on the sick economy of the country, thereby ensuring that Peter is not robbed to pay Paul in this arrangement.”
He described the new national minimum wage as a step in a right direction.
