Amid the recent call by the National Labour Congress (NLC) for a strike action, National Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) have raised concerns about safeguarding sustainable enterprises decent work, and national development objectives.
NECA’s DG, Adweale-Smatt Oyerinde, in a statement, Sunday warned that the parlous state of the economy and the recent mobilization for strike and civil action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) is not only worrisome but also calls for urgent action by Government and other stakeholders.
He stressed that While Organized Labour had the right to engage with the Government on welfare issues related to economic policies, it is crucial that any deadlock should not hinder peaceful business operations or negatively impact on the economy.
“We re-emphasis the importance of social dialogue, a potent instrument of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and a globally accepted mechanism for dispute resolution.”
The statement also noted that social partners must uphold respect for established Institutions responsible for adjudicating and arbitrating labour matters, including the National Industrial Court (NIC) and the Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP). Neglecting these Institutions could have severe repercussions on the economy and industrial relations system.
“While it should be noted that various ILO conventions, recommendations, International treaties and local legislations guarantee certain rights and privileges to Social Partners, a call for mass action or civil disobedience is certainly not one of them.”
Citing the End-Sars protest that was hijacked by unscrupulous elements leading to the loss of over N5 trillion by businesses in the formal and informal sectors and its devastating effects on the economy, NECA warned against a recurring scenario.
“Calls for strikes and mass actions during these challenging times could lead to a breakdown of law and order, posing risks to organized businesses and the nation as a whole.”
The statement also urges the Government to promptly address the economic challenges faced by workers and businesses. The closure of many businesses and the impending rise in unemployment rates demand urgent coordinated implementation of pro-growth and palliative schemes at the Federal level, complementing the efforts of some State Governments and Organized businesses.
“All parties are encouraged to work towards a constructive dialogue and respect for established labour institutions to safeguard the welfare of workers, businesses, and the nation’s development.”
