The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) has reaffirmed its support for Secretary-General Remi Aboderin, despite ongoing controversy surrounding his position as president of the West African Boxing Union (WABU).
During a crucial executive board meeting in Lagos, the NBBofC expressed satisfaction with Aboderin’s leadership and issued a vote of confidence in his role, rejecting calls for his removal.
NBBofC President, Rafiu Oladipo addressed the ongoing dispute between Aboderin and the African Boxing Union (ABU) President, Houcine Houichi. Oladipo emphasised that the disagreements should be resolved directly between the two parties, stressing that the NBBofC remains firmly behind Aboderin.
This decision follows ABU President Houcine Houichi’s announcement that WABU would be disbanded. The disbandment came in the wake of allegations of blackmail, financial mismanagement, and exploitation of boxers and promoters within the organisation, which have stirred significant controversy.
In a move to improve the operations of the NBBofC, the board also established three standing committees: Ratings/Rankings, Disciplinary, and Contract/Verification Committees. These committees were created to streamline processes and ensure better governance within the sport. Board members were appointed to lead each committee, aiming for enhanced efficiency.
The NBBofC also took the opportunity to review professional boxing activities in 2024, acknowledging the growth of the sport across the country. Contributions from key promoters, such as Wasiu Alabi of DE LADS Promotions and Ezekiel Adamu of Balmoral Promotions, were praised for their significant role in this progress.
Looking forward, the NBBofC has announced plans to hold quarterly meetings with all professional boxing promoters to foster better collaboration and communication. Additionally, the board will increase the frequency of its executive meetings from quarterly to monthly, recognising the growing demands of the sport.
The NBBofC’s continued support for Remi Aboderin highlights its commitment to ensuring stability and growth in Nigerian boxing, even in the face of challenges within the broader African boxing community.
