Inducts 29 new members

Nigerians may well be looking forward to seeing her athlete mounting the podium for a medal in water sports at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games if the plans of the Navy Sailing Club in this direction is anything to go by. 

According to the Commodore of the Navy Sailing Club, Ojo, Captain Femi Kayode Daramola (retd), a dedicated programme that would develop athletes is being put together in this direction.

Speaking at the induction of 29 new members of the Club, Captain Daramola stated that the members should see themselves as part of the wheel of progress in developing the youths towards greatness.

“Nigeria has made two appearances at the Olympics with Chierika Ukogu making it to the final round. That’s an indication that with more efforts, our athletes can make a podium finish in the long run. The Navy Sailing Club, Ojo is working with the Nigeria, Rowing, Canoe and Sailing Federation to ensure that an Olympic medal comes to Nigeria from the Tokyo Games in 2020.”

Captain Daramola called on corporate bodies as well as individuals to help the promotion of water stressing that the new members could be of assistance.   

“The Navy Sailing Club is to improve water sport in the country by creating an ambience for camaraderie among the rank and file which is extended to family members and even the civilians.” He recalled that in 2016, the club participated in the Admiralty Race. “Out of 50 participating countries from all over the world we placed 25, which was encouraging.” Chairman of the Induction Committee, Master Warrant Officer Egwue Hilary said the number represented over 100% increase in the number of new members. “Last year we had only 12. It is a tremendous leap, which we hope to maintain in the coming years.”

Chief Ugorji Omenuku who spoke on behalf of the new members expressed gratitude for the ceremony that brought them in and pledged the sum of N200, 000 as their contribution in refurbishing the children’s play ground. Barrister Kasarachi Opara had the task of administering the oath of allegiance while the Club Commodore presented the new members with certificates, club constitution and identity cards.
