90 per cent of student residents left with nothing

A devastating fire broke out at a popular polytechnic off-campus hostel, Macho Lodge in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, on Tuesday.

Sun gathered that the inferno began around 5 pm in the evening leaving 90 percent of the residents, who were primarily students, with nothing but ashes and sorrow.

An eyewitness, who was present during the incident, described the scene as heart-wrenching. The fire engulfed the building, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair. As the flames raged, students and former students of the institution watched helplessly as their home and belongings were devoured by the relentless fire.

Among those affected was a former student of IMAP Polytechnic, Lafia, known as Yahaya Bala Muhammed, popularly called “Plantain.” He was on the football field, enjoying a game and exercising when he received a distressing call informing him of the tragic events unfolding at his compound.

Plantain expressed his shock and sorrow, stating, “This is truly an unfortunate incident. “We lost not just a building but a home, a place filled with cherished memories, and a community of friends and neighbors.”

Daily Sun reports that the authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, while support and aid are pouring in from the local community and well-wishers to help those affected rebuild their lives and recover from this devastating loss.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in off-campus housing and the need for students and landlords to take necessary precautions to prevent such tragic events in the future.
