The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has expressed concern over the low level of enlistment of youths from the South-East geopolitical zone into the force, urging them to embrace the vast career opportunities available within its ranks.
The Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Ground Training Command (GTC), Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Ahmed Shinkafi, made the call during an Open Day event in Enugu as part of the activities commemorating the 61st Anniversary of the Nigerian Air Force. He was represented by the Chief of Staff of the GTC, AVM Anthony Martins.
Shinkafi noted that while NAF had continued to expand its operational reach and improve national security, the participation of South-East youths in the force remained disproportionately low.
“It is worrisome that young people from this region show little interest in joining the Nigerian Air Force and other security services,” he said.
According to him, the Air Force offers not only the opportunity to serve the nation but also provides a structured platform for career advancement and academic growth through trainings both at home and abroad.
He stressed NAF’s commitment to gender inclusion, encouraging young women from the region to also take up combat and leadership roles within the force.
“We want more female officers and airwomen. The Nigerian Air Force believes in equal opportunity, and we know women can bring unique perspectives and innovative ideas that enhance national security operations,” he stated.
AVM Shinkafi called on traditional leaders, community heads, and other influential figures in the region to sensitise and mobilise their youth to take advantage of the career prospects offered by the Air Force.
He described NAF as one of the foremost air combat forces on the continent, with a record of participation in successful peacekeeping operations across Africa.
“Today, NAF operations are driven by advanced technology, modern platforms, and a highly trained workforce committed to delivering precise and successful missions,” he added.
In his remarks, the Sarkin Hausawa of Enugu State, Alhaji Abubakar Sambo, praised the Nigerian Air Force for its commitment to national unity and security over the past 61 years. He said the Open Day gave civilians valuable insight into the operations and career opportunities in the service.
