The Rector, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, says his administration desires to make the oldest tertiary institution in the country a global brand.
Dr. Abdul stated this at the 35th convocation of YABATECH. He said the college has been ranked the best polytechnic in the country for a record six times: “YABATECH maintains and sustains her ranking as the best polytechnic in the country for the sixth consecutive time. We envision that by the end of the five-year tenure of this administration, the college should be first in the ranking of all tertiary institutions in the country.
“Uniting all stakeholders and positioning the college among her peers globally as a role model tertiary institution is another key agenda. It is also important and germane to produce knowledgeable, skilled, employable, entrepreneurial, self-reliant and innovative graduates.”
He added that the college is 76 years old and therefore became obvious to “us that the responsibility we bear and to grapple with in an old institution, is a national heritage that prides itself as the first and still the best.”
Abdul said his transformation targets are on global branding, effective education organization management system (EOMS), commitment to effective quality management practices, a widened participation of stakeholders, a personalized learning and effective response to learners, including those with special educational needs and most of all to make YABATECH the “First in Africa”.
He explained that the college within six months of his administration secured re-accreditation for 26 programmes and got approval to commence two new courses.
According to him, his administration created a committee to resolve staff grievances and establish a committee to improve staff welfare.
The college graduated 7,717 students for the 2021/2022 academic session out of which 254 obtained distinctions.
The overall best graduate went to Akhator Treasure Is, HND Food Technology while Adeniyi Dorcas Titilayo, Metallurgical Engineering, emerged overall best for the ND category.
