The Murtala Muhammed Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has reported a substantial increase in revenue generation, amounting to N41.6 billion over the past six months. This represents a remarkable 107.5 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023.
In a press briefing held in Lagos on Tuesday, Comptroller Michael Awe, the Customs Area Controller, revealed that the command’s revenue from January to June 2024 reached N80.4 billion. This is a significant rise from the N38.7 billion collected in the corresponding period in 2023. Awe attributed this success to the diligent efforts of officers in ensuring that licensed agents adhered to import and export regulations.
Awe stated, “The revenue generated reflects a progressive increase of N41.6 billion. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of our officers in enforcing compliance with customs guidelines and ensuring accurate declarations by agents.”
The command also said it made substantial strides in combating smuggling. Over the past six months, the value of contraband seized amounted to over N6 billion. Notable seizures included- five packages of 250mg tramadol, 12 packages of 225mg tramadol, one package containing 50 rounds of 9mm live ammunition, 46 packages of dried sea cucumbers, three packages of donkey male genitals and 45 pieces of Jojef Tomahawk semi-automatic rifles.
These items, with a cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N6.06 billion, were confiscated due to violations such as false declarations, non-compliance with import/export guidelines, and breaches of the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCS Act) 2023.
In terms of export trade, the command reported exports valued at N266.7 million from January to June 2024. This includes an FOB (Free on Board) value of $204,597. The command’s focus on enhancing export processes reflects its commitment to bolstering Nigeria’s trade and economic development.
Awe concluded, “Our efforts in both revenue collection and anti-smuggling operations are aimed at supporting Nigeria’s economic stability and growth. We will continue to enforce trade regulations rigorously to ensure that our policies benefit the nation and contribute to a fair trading environment.”
The impressive revenue increase and effective anti-smuggling actions highlight the Murtala Muhammed Area Command’s pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria’s economic framework and trade regulations.
