The Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike has approved N70,000 new minimum wage for staff of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

This is contained in a Tuesday statement signed by Anthony Odeh, the Press Secretary to the Acting Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, Grace Adayilo.

Daily Sun recalls that President Bola Tinubu signed the new Minimum Wage Bill into law in May 2024, establishing N70,000 as the minimum wage after months of intense negotiations with organised labour.

Months after the presidential assent, the FCT chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) threatened to initiate a strike on November 30, 2024, over delayed implementation of the new wage in the FCT.

The unions also berated the Wike-led administration for allegedly failing to engage with them since its inauguration in August 2023.

In Tuesday’s statement,
Adayilo was quoted as saying Wike granted approval for implementation of N70,000 as new minimum wage as well as payment of three months arrears for all staff of the FCTA with effect from November, 2024.

“This gesture will further spur the entire staff of the Administration to support the Minister to continue to deliver on the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Mrs. Adayilo equally thanked the Minister for always granting expeditious approval for payment of staff allowances and claims,” the statement reads.
