D’Bio Wellness and Selfcare, in partnership with Lusong QSE Ltd, conducted a health awareness programme for staff of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) at its ultra-modern auditorium in Abuja.
The one-day training, held over the weekend and themed “Self-Care as a Foundation for Health and Wellness”, aimed to promote physical and mental well-being among employees.
The event featured expert-led presentations on mental health, nutrition, and the essential principles of self-care. The facilitation team was led by the convener of the D’Bio Wellness and Selfcare Summit, Dr Monica Hemben Eimunjeze. She was joined by a consultant psychiatrist, Dr Olajumoke Koyejo, and a registered dietitian-nutritionist, Ms Obianuju Chukuwuemeka.
The objective of the training was to equip NSIB staff with practical knowledge and skills necessary to improve their overall health. Participants were introduced to the concept of self-care as a proactive approach to wellness, with a strong emphasis on mental health awareness and nutritional literacy.
In her presentation, Dr Koyejo highlighted findings from a national survey conducted by the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, which estimated that 20-30 per cent of Nigeria’s population suffers from mental health disorders. She explained that symptoms often start with subtle signs such as poor sleep, irritability, or appetite changes and can escalate to severe conditions if left unaddressed.
She emphasised the importance of addressing workplace-related stress through organisational reforms such as improved communication, clear job roles, recognition of staff achievements, and management of workload.
Discussions also focused on protective factors for maintaining work-life balance, encouraging participants to explore practical ways to safeguard their mental wellbeing.
Dr Eimunjeze elaborated on the seven pillars of self-care as promoted by the International Selfcare Foundation, which include health literacy, mental wellbeing, physical activity, healthy eating, risk avoidance, good hygiene, and responsible use of medical products and services. She urged participants to adopt these practices intentionally and consistently to enhance their quality of life.
“We are delighted to partner with NSIB to promote a culture of wellness and self-care within the organisation,” said Dr Eimunjeze, expressing satisfaction with the programme’s impact.
Representing the Director General, NSIB, Alex Badeh Jr, the General Manager, Planning, Research and Statistics, Mrs Maryam Shekoni, emphasised the bureau’s commitment to staff welfare. She thanked the facilitators for their comprehensive and insightful presentations and expressed the bureau’s appreciation for their contributions to staff development.
Staff members from various departments across the bureau attended the session, which was lauded for its depth and relevance. The programme underscored the growing recognition of wellness as a key component of workplace productivity and employee satisfaction.
