Two pupils of Graceland International School, Rivers State, have emerged the winner of the 2025 edition of Maths4Life competition.
The school, represented by 14-year-old Agbo Daniel and 16-year-old Elvis Chiedozie beat seven secondary schools in the country to win the coveted prize of N3 million.
At the final of the tournament, organised by Maths4Life Foundation held in Lagos, Agbo and Chiedozie of Graceland International School defeated Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja by 27 points to 6.
Agbo and Chiedozie got N1 million each, their Maths teacher and school received N500,000 each.
Loyola Jesuit College got N2 million, the two pupils got N750,000 each, their Maths teacher and school received N250,000 each while Austica Memorial College, Anambra State, emerged 2nd runner-up and went home with N1 million. The pupils received N300,000 each, their Maths teacher and school got N200,000 each.
Agbo was presented with a plaque as the most outstanding contestant of the tournament.
Agbo, an SS 12 student, who wants to study Software Engineering at University of Waterloo, Canada, said he has won many Maths awards and represented his school abroad in different competitions.
He confirmed that he is good at Mathematics and lauded his Maths teacher as well as parents for their support to ensure he and Elvis emerged the winner of the Maths4Life tournament.
The whizik predicted that he would obtain A1 in General Mathematics and Further Mathematics in the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Chiedozie, SS 111 student of Graceland School, said to prepare for the Maths4Life tournament, he watched different videos of other Maths competitions.
“We were confident that we would win the competition. I have represented Nigeria in Pan African Mathematics Olympia in South Africa and came back with a silver medal.”
In his address, the President, Maths4Life Foundation, Mr. Omoniyi Osuntuyi, said he had the vision for the Maths tournament while in secondary school in 1997.
Osuntuyi said fairness is the watch word of the organizers and that none of the executives of the foundation have any connection with the eight schools involved in the 2025 tournament.
He affirmed that the foundation would continue to promote education through Mathematics among secondary school students nationwide.
“We started the Maths4Life tournament on February 14, 2015. The foundation wants to use Mathematics as a tool to help students. We have given over N100 million as awards since inception of the competition. Expect something bigger next year,” he stressed.
The foundation used the occasion to present plaques to some sponsors, who also pledged their continued support for the Maths4Life tournament.
