A group within the Labour Party (LP), the Labour Party Patriotic Members Congress (LPPMC), has called on the national leadership of the party to organise comprehensive democratic congresses at all levels.

The group, made up of both old and new party members, believes this is crucial to ensure that leaders who align with the aspirations of a new Nigeria are selected.

Speaking at a press conference in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, LPPMC National Spokesperson, Dexter Femi Akin-Alamu expressed the group’s dissatisfaction with the recent ruling of the Supreme Court, regarding the presidential elections. However, he acknowledged the supremacy of the constitution and emphasised the group’s commitment to the rule of law.

Akin-Alamu stressed that the Labour Party has experienced a significant surge in membership over the past two years, as individuals across the nation join in the common desire to shape a new Nigeria.

However, he noted that not all members share the same vision for the country’s future. To address this, he called for the organization of national, state, local, and ward congresses to allow both new and longstanding members, actively participate in selecting leaders.

Akin-Alamu stated that the LPPMC believes that a comprehensive democratic congress would be an opportunity to create a transformative and inclusive democratic process within the party. By uniting members behind leaders who align with the aspirations of a new Nigeria, he said, the party could work towards creating positive change.

Acknowledging the challenges within the Labour Party, Akin-Alamu identified a lack of transparency and effective leadership as key issues, adding that internal divisions have been threatening the unity of the party, but members are determined to rebuild its foundation. Despite being the third recognized party in the National Assembly, the Labour Party recognizes the need for further strengthening and plans to create a lasting structure.

The LPPMC believes in a brighter future for Nigeria, where citizens actively participate in nation-building. They are determined to change the narrative and urge the populace to rally around the Labour Party as a political entity that seeks to positively transform the nation.

To overcome these challenges, the Southwest Coordinator of LPPMC, Folu Badamosi, also explained that party members are working tirelessly to rebuild the Labour Party’s foundation.

He stated that despite being the third recognised party in the National Assembly, the Labour Party is in need of strengthening, saying “What we are doing now is to strengthen that foundation and ensure that the structure will be long-lasting.”

Looking towards the future, Badamosi expressed hope for a brighter Nigeria, where citizens actively participate in nation-building. He stressed that the Labour Party aims to change the narrative and urged the populace to rally around the party as a political entity that seeks to positively transform the nation.
