Akwa Ibom state governor, Mr. Umo Eno has urged all local government chairmen in the state saddled with the responsibility of bringing government to the grassroots level to carry out their duties deligently.
Gov Eno said while addressing the people at the inauguration of projects in Ukanafon local government area yesterday, that the local government chairmen who were sworn in to office in December 2020 were saddle with the responsibility of bringing government to grassroots level thereby encouraging a sense of belonging among the populace,
Representated by Mr Monday Eyo, Chairman of Local Government Services Commission, the governor said it has been observed that both elected officers and key functionaries of the local government area have failed to cooperate in other to perform their statutory duties, there by denying the local government the much desirable development.
“To accomplish, these provisions were made in the constitution and other related documents to enforce the presence of elected officers and key functionaries whose duties include operations of administrative functions to bring to bear the needed prove and enlightenment in the local government communities. ”
He said the local government chairmen are to facilitate effective and efficient administrative functions that would forester rapid socioeconomic development of their communities, thereby promoting communication links between the central governmental activities and the people at the grassroots.
“The effectiveness of the mamount crowd here is a clear indication that government of ukanafon is effective and working. The local government in Nigeria was created for the purpose of bringing the government closer to the people at the grassroots leve.”
“The present state administration headed by me, has proven that there are politicians who still have the interest of the people, this is clearly expressed in the provision of the assembly hall, water project and police station which would be inaugurated today.
“As these projects would be formally handed over to the people for use, I urge you all to play a key role in the maintenance of the facilities and ensuring the safety and protection of these projects which would inturn birth other meaningful project for your betterment.” The governor admonished.
The chairman, Ukanafun local government council, Dr Godwin Inyieng, appealed to Governor Umo Eno to intervene in the construction of Utu ikot – Afaha Obo Ata Essien – Ibiangha , Ikpe- Ine Road covering Etim Ekpo, Ukanafun and Oruk Anam local government areas.
He expressed his appreciation to the governor for hissupport and co-operation, as well as the leader and members of Ukanafun legislative council, principal officers and the entire staff of the council for being wonderful partners in the interpretation of his administration dreams.
“It is the synergy that has existed between the executive arm and the legislative arm of the local government that has resulted in our modest effort to touching the lives of our people”
Inyieng said considering the the security challenges that bedeviled the local government area and the neighboring communities years ago it was imperative to provide a security facility across the river in Ukanafun local government Area.
He listed other products carried out by his administration in the area of road, health, education, rural electrification, youth empowerment, women empowerment, employment and general administration.
The chairman of the occasion Hon. Eno Akpan congratulated the chairman on establishing people-oriented project for the local government and for the benefit of the people.
“He has tried not as a politician but as a pastor, most importantly he believes in the maxims charity begins at home”.
Akpan explained that at a population of about one million people and with only one police station hitherto, the siting of the police station serves four local government namely Ukanafun, Oruk Anam, Etim Ekpo and Abak.
He pleaded that the police station should be properly staffed for effective enforcement of the law.
