In a major effort to address drug abuse among youths, the Ikorodu Doyen Lions Club recently held a drug abuse awareness lecture at Kesbol School, in Oreyo, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos.

The event aimed to highlight the critical issue of drug abuse and educate students about its dangers and repercussions.

The programmes included a presentation of drug abuse-related documentaries, an interactive session and a video illustrating the negative impacts of drug use, led by a guest speaker.

Topics covered during the lecture included the definition of drug abuse, various types of drugs, causes and effects, consequences, prevention strategies and treatment options.

Attendees learned about the severe repercussions of drug abuse, including addiction, health risks, crime, and family issues. The importance of education, prevention and treatment was strongly emphasized.

Recommendations from the event included the implementation of drug education programmes in schools, increased community awareness campaigns, accessible treatment services and support for family and mental health services.

The effort underscores the Lions Club’s commitment to tackling pressing social issues and enhancing community well-being.

The event was attended by students, youths within the community, members of the Ikorodu Doyen Lions Club, Region 6 chairperson, Adefunke Esan, and Zone 6A chairperson, Kemi Okusanya.

Oluwole Olabode, president of the Ikorodu Doyen Lions Club, said the initiative was to positively impact the community and promote a safer, healthier environment. He noted that the lecture was part of the club’s broader campaign against drug abuse.

“This campaign demonstrates our commitment to addressing social issues and sets a standard for other organisations. As we continue this initiative, we will measure its impact, gather feedback and refine our strategies to enhance effectiveness,” Olabode said.

Sakiru Agboke, youth awareness programme chairperson and proprietor of Kesbol School, emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts to combat drug abuse and the value of educating youths early to resist societal and peer pressure.

“The Lions Club’s approach is holistic, tackling drug abuse from various angles and promoting community involvement and education. By using our extensive network and resources, we aim to significantly impact the fight against drug abuse.

“Educating students and fostering open dialogue about the risks of drug use empowers them to make informed decisions and seek help when needed. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to building healthier communities through education and prevention,” Agboke said.
