The Department of Mass Communication at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) recently organized its first-ever staff retreat, a transformative one-day event aimed at setting the agenda for excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement.
Held on December 29, 2024, the retreat provided an opportunity for staff to reflect on the department’s achievements, identify challenges, and outline strategies for future success.
During the retreat, participants engaged in robust discussions that led to the adoption of key resolutions designed to enhance the department’s impact and relevance. High on the agenda was a renewed focus on research and scholarly activities.
The department resolved to prioritize innovative and impactful research in areas such as affiliate marketing, artificial intelligence, and media literacy. This commitment reflects the department’s vision to address both local and global challenges through academic excellence.
Collaboration with industry stakeholders was another major focus. To bridge the gap between academia and the professional world, the department plans to establish partnerships with leading media organizations, film productions, and advertising and public relations agencies.
These collaborations will provide practical exposure for students and staff, ensuring their skills and knowledge remain aligned with industry trends.
Community engagement also featured prominently in the resolutions. The department committed to revamping its campus radio station, LASUSTECH 101.9FM, to better serve the university and its surrounding communities.
Additionally, efforts will be directed toward promoting the department’s programs through targeted campaigns and initiatives aimed at fostering deeper connections with local communities.
Innovation and creativity were identified as pillars for the department’s growth. Plans are underway to introduce new programs such as a debate series titled “LASUSTECH Roundtable” and to revive the popular potpourri program, both of which will encourage critical thinking and creative expression among students and staff.
To guide the implementation of these initiatives, the department established an industry advisory board comprising prominent thought leaders in media and communication.
This board will play a crucial role in aligning the department’s mission with the evolving demands of the media landscape, thereby ensuring the relevance and quality of its programs.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Department, Dr. Steven Anu’ Adesemoye, reaffirmed the department’s commitment to excellence. “We are dedicated to making the Department of Mass Communication at LASUSTECH a center of excellence providing first-class teaching, training, and research in media and communication in Africa,” he said.
As part of its roadmap for achieving these goals, the department plans to develop a comprehensive community engagement strategy, create opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship, and foster a culture of collaboration and teamwork.
Known for producing outstanding media and communication professionals, LASUSTECH’s Department of Mass Communication is poised to redefine excellence in media education.
With the resolutions from this retreat, the department has laid a solid foundation for its transformation into a global leader in media and communication studies.
